Buying Used Pool Tables

Buying a pool table is a once in a lifetime event. If you are thinking of buying a pool table but aren't sure if you should by a used or a new one, there are a few things to take into consideration.

One pro on the side of used pool tables is the price, which should be quite a bit cheaper on a used table. However, be wary of a used pool table's condition and ensure it's in good shape before you buy. You should inspect used tables carefully from top to bottom, side to side and end to end. Make sure the wood, legs, cushions and pockets are in good shape. Test it by rolling a ball along the table to make sure the slate is even - one of the most important elements to a pool table. Remember, a three piece slate bed is better than a one piece bed. Slate that screws to the base frame of the table is essential so that the billiard slate doesn't separate from the pool table over the years.

The frame of the table is usually called the cabinet. When checking a used pool table look underneath the cabinet and table. Check to see if the legs have been wet or are moldy. If they are, it usually means water has damaged the legs. This damage could result in split legs and will compromise the stability of the table.

Another thing to check for on both new and used table is the rails. The ideal pool table rails have the nuts right inside the rail itself. Stay away from table in which the rails have plates screwed into the bottom surface of the rail. Vinyl pockets are durable and long lasting but leather pockets should be inspected for cuts in the leather which may chip the balls. Leather pockets are replaceable but are expensive and costs start at approximately $100 to $400. Also make sure the pockets are tight and will stay in place.

Odds are that you will have to replace the cloth on a used pool table when moving it. Cloth can be reused but any small holes can easily become larger holes. You can usually do the bed cloth yourself if you are handy and able to follow instructions, if not you may need a professional who moves pool tables regularly to do it for you. Remember you need to disassemble the used pool table before moving it, and you should mark it in order to reassemble it exactly the same way. Do not move a used pool table in one piece as you will likely damage the table.

There are obvious advantages of buying a new pool table from a dealer as they have the invaluable knowledge, experience and expertise to meet your needs. They also carry a varied line of accessories, tables and furniture. Most dealers offer professional installation, and most importantly new pool tables come with a warranty/guarantee.

If you do buy from a dealer be wary of internet only sales as they may result in you having difficulty trying to resolve warranty issues. There also may be hidden freight costs and you will, of course, have to install the table yourself. Some of these companies may not be reliable and you never know if they will still be in business if you need them in a year or two.

Whatever you decide it's usually best to buy a known brand name table as they are built with a history of engineering experience and expertise. Many non-brand name tables don't offer the same expertise, and often come with limited warranties and limited selection.
